Loto-Québec online poker site is open for business

Poker.ca announced Loto- Québec’s intention to join British Colombia’s and other local governments’ efforts to provide a safe, legal, and legitimate option for online poker and online gambling earlier this year, and we are now happy to announce that the site is live!

Loto-Québec online poker site is open for business The site, titled espacejeux.com, has faced a significant amount of controversy due to its considerable arsenal of enticing promotions and freebies. Critics claim such promotions will prove irresistible to many Canadians who might otherwise have steered clear of online poker, online casinos, or even gambling as a whole. Richard Lessard, the director of public health in Montreal, claimed one particularly lucrative bonus to be “indecent.” The bonus in question promised $10 worth of free bets to anyone who registers on the site by this coming Wednesday, and public health officials claim it could provoke a wave of gambling that could prove destructive.

Whether or not this will be the case remains to be seen. Loto-Québec’s main goal in creating and promoting this site is to make sure Canadians are gambling safely and responsibly, and they claim offering these kinds of enticing promotions will lure current gamblers from less secure – and legally questionable – online poker sites.

Amid and despite the controversy, 800 Canadians logged on by mid-morning and more than 1600 by early evening. The site is basic but sufficient in terms of graphics and features, and offers tutorials for less experienced poker players. Loto-Québec expects to generate close to $50 million through the site by the year 2012, and with this kind of traffic so early in the game, they should manage to pull it off.
